Kevin's Book

Natural Disasters as a Catalyst for Social Capital: A Study of the 500-Year Flood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is my first book.

It explores the vastly under-explored link between natural disasters and our collective sense of togetherness ("social capital"), drawing on extensive field research and in-depth interviews from the unprecedented 500-Year Flood in Eastern Iowa in 2008.

This book, in highlighting the enormous impact of one disaster in a mid-sized Midwestern city, offers the framework for a new theory on why social capital shifts in society from one generation to another: the transformative impact of shared traumas.
